How to Ride Seoul Subway Like a Local (2025 Edition)
Welcome to Seoul! You Need This Card.
Hello, friends! Welcome to Seoul. Are you excited to see Myeongdong, Gyeongbokgung Palace, and cafes in Seongsu? Seoul is a big city. The subway map might look like a crazy spider web to you. It looks complicated, right?
But don't worry. The Seoul subway is one of the best in the world. It is clean, fast, and safe. To use it, you need one "Magic Key."
It is the T-Money Card.
Today, I will be your guide. I will tell you how to buy it and how to use it. This guide includes the newest 2025 tips. Read this, and you will travel like a "Seoulite" (a Seoul local).
T-Money : Where to Buy? How Much?
T-Money is not just a subway ticket. It is an electronic wallet. You can use it for the subway, buses, taxis, and even at convenience stores!
Some friends ask, "Can I just buy a single-use ticket?" Please don't.
It is annoying to buy a ticket every time. Also, single tickets are more expensive. You cannot get transfer discounts.
Where can I buy it?
Go to a Convenience Store.
Do you see GS25, CU, 7-Eleven, or Emart24? Go inside. Just say to the staff: "T-Money card, please."
There are many designs. You might see cute characters like Kakao Friends or Line Friends. 😍 They are so cute! I recommend buying a cute one as a souvenir.
| Card Type | Price (KRW) | Where to Buy | Note |
| Basic | 3,000 ~ 4,000 won | Convenience Stores, Subway Stations | Simple design |
| Character | 5,000 ~ 6,000 won | Convenience Stores (CVS) | Best Souvenir! |
| Korea Tour Card | 4,000 won | Airport, Major Stations | Includes discounts |
Warning! "Why Cash Only?" (How to Charge)
Okay, this is important. I feel a bit sorry about this part. Korea uses credit cards everywhere. But... Subway charging machines accept CASH ONLY.
This is where many foreigners panic. "What? No credit card?" Yes, really. So, please bring Korean Won (Cash) to the station.
🔋 How to Charge (Step-by-Step)
- Find the "Ticket Vending Machine" at the station.
- Choose your language (English, Chinese, Japanese) on the screen.
- Place your card on the "Reloading Pad."
- Choose the amount and insert Cash.
💡 Local Tip
Load 20,000 won to 30,000 won (about $15~$25) at the start. This will last for 3 or 4 days.
No cash? Go to a convenience store. Staff there can sometimes charge it with a credit card. But cash is the safest way.
The Magic of "Transfers" (Save Money!)
Do you want to save money? Use the "Transfer" system. If you change from Subway to Bus or Bus to Bus, it is almost free!
But there is one strict rule.
"Tag Out when you leave!"
In some countries, you don't tap your card when you exit. But in Seoul, you MUST tap your card when you get off. If you don't? You cannot get the discount. You might even pay double the fee next time! 😱
- Base Fare : 1,400 won (about $1)
- Time Limit : Within 30 minutes after tagging out.
- Limit : Up to 4 times.
New 2025 Updates (Super Useful!)
This is the latest information. Even some guidebooks don't have this yet.
1. Climate Card - Tourist Pass
Are you going to travel A LOT? Then buy the "Climate Card Tourist Pass." It offers unlimited rides.
- 1-Day Pass : 5,000 won
- 2-Day Pass : 8,000 won
- 3-Day Pass : 10,000 won
- 5-Day Pass : 15,000 won
You can buy it at the subway office (i-Center) or convenience stores.
2. "Oops! I need the toilet!" (15-Minute Re-entry)
Did you enter the wrong gate? Or do you need to use the bathroom urgently? In the past, you had to pay again to enter. But now? It is FREE.
If you enter the same station within 15 minutes, it is free. This is a game-changer! Just tag out, do your business, and tag in again. Easy!
Ready to Explore Seoul?
Seoul's subway is cool. It has strong Air Conditioning in summer. It has heated seats in winter (like a warm spa!). And the Wi-Fi is super fast.
It looks complex, but it is easy. Just download "Naver Map" or "Subway Korea" app. Grab your T-Money card. Now you can go anywhere!
If the gate says "Beep- insufficient balance," don't panic. Just go charge it. It's a funny travel memory.
