Free Refills & No Tips, Why Eating in Korea is the Best
Did a Korean waiter chase you down the street just to give your money back? Most people think tipping is polite. In Korea, it's actually not! It’s a bit strange, right? Most countries love extra money, but here, they might think you forgot your change.
Is it just me, or does it feel weird to leave a restaurant without leaving a tip? To be honest, it’s actually much easier for your wallet. The price on the menu is the final price. Simply put, "What you see is what you pay." No hidden math!
1. The Magic Drawer Under the Table
You sit down. You are hungry. But wait—where are the spoons? Don't look at the tabletop. Look at the side of the table! Most Korean restaurants have a secret drawer. Inside, you will find spoons, chopsticks, and napkins.
In Korea, we have a "group culture." One person usually sets the table for everyone. If you do this for your friends, they will think you are very kind and "hip." It’s a small move that makes a big difference!
2. Don’t Be Shy, Shout "Yeogiyo!"
In many countries, shouting for a waiter is rude. But in Korea, if you stay quiet, you might never get your water. Look for a small plastic button on your table. Press it! If there is no button, just wave and say "Yeogiyo!" (Over here!).
Actually, it feels like a mini-game. Simply put, "Yeogiyo" means "Hey, I'm here, please help!" The staff won't be angry. They like fast service just as much as you do. Just do it!
3. Quick Guide: Do’s and Don’ts
I made a simple table for you. Show this to your friends!
| Topic | Do This (Yes!) | Avoid This (No!) |
|---|---|---|
| Tipping | Say "Thank you" loudly. | Leave cash on the table. |
| Rice Bowl | Leave it on the table. | Pick it up with your hand. |
| Paying | Go to the counter near the door. | Wait at the table with a card. |
| Side Dishes | Ask for more (It's free!). | Worry about the extra cost. |
4. Keep Your Bowl on the Table!
This is a big one. In Japan or China, people lift their rice bowls. In Korea, we don't. It’s a bit strange, but lifting your bowl was traditionally seen as "poor manners."
Simply put, "Bowl stays down, spoon goes up." Also, don't stick your chopsticks straight up into your rice. It looks like a funeral ritual. It might give your Korean friends a little shock!
5. The Glory of Free Refills (Banchan)
The best part of Korean food? Banchan! These are the small side dishes like Kimchi or sprouts. They are always free. If you finish them, you can ask for more.
Look for a sign that says "Self Service." It means you can go and grab more yourself. I honestly love this part because I can eat ten plates of corn salad. But remember, don't leave leftovers! Take only what you can eat.
6. Where is the Bill?
Don't wait at your table for the bill. Usually, there is a small piece of paper on your table. Take that paper and walk to the front door. That’s where the cash register is.
If there is no paper, just go to the counter and tell them your table number. Payment is fast and easy. No "check please" dance required!
